About Childress, Texas
Childress County was named after George C. Childress, the man who wrote the Texas Declaration of Independence. The town grew up along the Fort Worth and Denver Railway and has been the county seat since 1887. The Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River cuts through the county, and the creek-bottom terrain gives the area its regional nickname — the “Greenbelt.” That heavy grass and river-bottom country makes it prime ranching territory. Childress also hosts the Greenbelt Bowl, a long-running high school football all-star game that draws teams from across the region.
