About Flomot
Flomot’s name is one of the more unusual in Texas. It blends the names of two neighboring counties — Floyd and Motley — because when the community’s post office opened in 1902, it sat right on the line between them. The post office eventually moved, but the name stayed.
The community developed in the late 1800s with a school and a general store, and by the mid-1930s Flomot had two cotton gins, two grocery stores, a service station, and several restaurants. It was a full-service rural supply point for the farms and ranches spread across this corner of the county. Cotton and maize were the primary crops, with dryland farming the standard approach in this semi-arid country.
Flomot is about 14 miles south of Quitaque and roughly 106 miles southeast of Amarillo. The community is still here, and so are the farms and ranches that need fuel, propane, and supplies.
