McLean and Historic Route 66
McLean is one of the most historically interesting towns in the Texas Panhandle. Route 66 came through here in 1927, and the highway helped drive McLean’s growth through some of the hardest economic years of the 20th century. In 1929, Phillips Petroleum chose McLean for its first Texas gas station — a piece of petroleum history that fits right in with what this town has always been about.
In 1984, McLean was the last town in Texas to be bypassed by Interstate 40 when the new highway diverted traffic away from the old Main Street route. The community has held on.
Today McLean is home to the Devil’s Rope Museum at 100 Kingsley Street — the world’s largest barbed wire museum, housing thousands of wire specimens and related artifacts. The same building also contains the Texas Route 66 Museum, with more than 700 artifacts from the famous highway. If you haven’t stopped in, it’s worth the visit.
Gray County’s economy rests on wheat, cotton, and cattle. The county regularly ranks among Texas leaders in wheat production, and agriculture drives the daily demand for diesel, propane, and lubricants that Silverton Oil supplies.
