About Vigo Park
The town was born out of a real estate venture in the early 1900s. In 1906 the Indiana-Texas Land Company purchased 4,420 acres of former JA Ranch land and laid out a townsite, advertising it to homesteaders back in Indiana. The settlers named their new community after Vigo and Parke counties in the Terre Haute area — a piece of home on the High Plains.
The community never got the railroad its founders had hoped for, but it held on. Irrigation wells and farming innovations allowed residents to build productive operations on the High Plains soil. Feedlots came in 1925 and expanded the livestock side of the local economy.
Today the area runs on wheat, cotton, grain sorghum, corn, and cattle — the same mix that has defined Swisher County agriculture for over a century. That agriculture runs on diesel, propane, and lubricants.
