The community traces back to 1893, when it was established as a rural school district on land donated by the McSpadden family. It was first called Beulah, but when a post office opened in 1897, it was renamed Wayside — for the community’s position on the “way-side” of Palo Duro Canyon.
The first white settlers here were cowhands from the legendary JA Ranch, founded in 1876 by Charles Goodnight — the oldest continuously operating cattle ranch in the Texas Panhandle. That heritage of cattle, land, and hard work never left. Today Wayside supports stock raising and irrigated farming.
